This series of churches take inspiration from local church facades. Like medieval painters, I looked for repetition of shapes in order to interweave a tight structure . To add a visual weight and a sense of the past I surrounded these images with antique frames discovered in the shops near my home in Warren. They lend to the paintings the preciousness of icons. Abbot Suger, the builder of the first Gothic space (St. Denis in 1140-44), stated his goal as striving to evoke "some strange region of th universe which neither exists entirely in the slime of the earth nor entirely in the purity of Heaven." That seems to me the goal of the painter as well.
